OPINION Celebrating Thanksgiving and Columbus Day

So when people prepare meals to commemorate a day when the pilgrims and the settlers had a feast what would you call that? Isn’t that celebrating the day? The best way to not celebrate the day is by not doing any of that stuff including preparing big dinners.

Again, I don't know any black people doing that. For example, when I'm at my In-laws for example, the whole discussion of the day surrounds around being thankful to God for the blessings throughout the year. I'd wager that for the majority of black households there is no mention of pilgrims, so to say that people are preparing meals to commemorate that day is inaccurate. The holiday has whatever meaning the people worshipping it give it. Same reason Natives can change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day. That's what they celebrate, so that's what it is.

If you are cooking meals on that day which is based on the pilgrims and settlers having a feast then you are celebrating the day. That’s it. There are plenty of other days in the year where you can gather family and friends and cook a feast and “be thankful”. But if you do that on thanksgiving which is part of thanksgiving tradition then you are celebrating the day. No amount of splaining on your part will change the point.

You are celebrating the day. We agree on that. What we don't agree on is what they are celebrating on that day. You celebrate what you want. lol Holidays are like words, they mean what you and the people around you want them to mean. And days like Thanksgiving and Christmas are more likely to have more of the family off work, which is why people choose those days to get together.

We are going around in circles.

I dont think some of yall even know black people in real life. We dont do things like white people do. Dont run around saying we go over the top on thanksgiving because we cook food and watch football. Which we do all through the fall like everybody else. I think.some of yall get off on black americans being lost disconnected and ignorant and want to believe it so you make it true in your mind.

Next yall gonna say black americans have no culture.

No one celebrates it but everyone seems to say it is day that our family gets together. If you make it a family get together day than it is a form of celebration to me. There is nothing wrong with it and families should get together but let’s not act like it is for us. America( Thanksgiving is not celebrated anywhere else) has convinced you that you have to do something on that day. No one gets together for Labor Day. Please don’t act like you don’t feel compelled to do something on that day and if you don’t feel that way that I am just wrong and that is ok with me.

Labor day is the end of summer before school who has time for get together lol school coming up. Canada has thanksgiving

we dont.....you start the thread and we then fight

So the fact that Thanksgiving was based on people getting together and eating then you get together and eat on that day is just a coincidence?

the reasons yall using is why people think the vday argument is bs.

how you going to say...we get together but we dont celebrate the day we celebrating but trying to say it dont mean what it means....yet then say you wont be forced into celebrating a day to show love.

are all not a get together? whether big or small? are all days that are called a holiday not celebrated on that day and not the day after?

must be two sides.

the ladies in the vday thread is looking strong in they arguement

The same can be said for the 4th of July. Black folks are def about pullin that grill out, finding the best deals on ribs and ingredients for that potato salad that everybody always asks who made it, and fireworks.

Black people weren't even considered people in America when Independence Day was ratified. They were viewed as sell here/buy here property. For the most part, our ancestors weren't free (a few of us have afforded a privileged or nonaffiliated background so I'm not speaking about 1.00073% of the board) around that period. Slavery wasn't abolished until almost 100 years later.

:foh3:It's just another "white man's holiday" that black folks love and use.

:cont:You celebrate that shit. You guiltyaf.

Why not just accept the fact the most people celebrate holidays just the way the were taught to celebrate them. We have dinner but it is not the same dinner as Thanksgiving because we cook the Turkey different than they did. Just say I/we do it because that is the way it has always been in my family but it doesn’t mean the same or just say I do it and I don’t care about the origin instead of trying to defend the fact that you celebrate the holdiday the exact way that they did

I celebrate all the holidays. Even St. Patrick's Day and I'm far from Irish. Why? Well first off, green and gold are my colors. And secondly it's just some fun. Some of y'all forgot what getting together for some connections and lighthearted good times is all about. Quit with the loner act you will live longer.

Ok fuck it we celeberate... and? now what

why try to be different tho?

can we not create our own holidays as black people and take those days off?

enough signatures and we can make it an official day off.

we need to stand up for ourselves at some point.

I celebrate it. I’m not out here thanking the Indians and pilgrims and shit but I sure am thanking my people for cooking these greens and this bomb ass dressing.

I celebrate every holiday for my own damn reasons and i don’t give a hoot about what anybody say. Y’all can stay woke asses over there.
