Sean Duffy, the transportation secretary, told Fox News and CNN in interviews on Sunday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had texted him to offer the services of military reservists trained as air traffic controllers to alleviate staff shortages that are worsening during the shutdown and have prompted the government to impose limits on air traffic.

President Ronald Reagan brought in military controllers to fill air traffic positions in 1981, when he responded to a strike by firing the entire workforce of unionized controllers. Duffy said in the interviews that he was not sure if he would be able to use military controllers now, since they had not been trained to manage the airspace they would be working in.

But, he said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” “if I can, I’m going to use them.”
 
In a statement explaining his support for a deal to end the shutdown, Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, cited air traffic controllers working without pay and the limbo in which federal nutritional assistance benefits have been since the shutdown began.

Durbin framed today’s deal as progress. “At Democrats’ urging, today’s bill is not the same one we’ve voted down 14 times,” he said. “Republicans finally woke up and realized their Groundhog Day needed to end. This bill is not perfect, but it takes important steps to reduce their shutdown’s hurt.”

It's crazy that they would cave right after the Reps just got destroyed in the elections.

That said, this shutdown has been hard on a lot of people and we're getting closer to the holiday season, so I can't fault them for wanting to end the shutdown.

This is the "if people want the world to burn then the worst off among us is going to suffer the most" stuff i would always mention whenever folks claimed they wanted to overthrow everything or just sit back and "watch the chaos burn the system down". Most folks really aren't prepared mentally to go without and this shut down proved it. And I don't say that in a disparaging way. Most folks truly aren't ready for what a full scale let it all collapse reality the way many claim to be. Politicians know this so they play on it every single day
