What to Know

  • AFSCME District Council 33 is on strike, impacting many of the city's services, including 911 dispatch, trash removal, water and more.
  • The strike went into effect at 12:01 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, after the union and the city failed to reach an agreement on a new contract.
  • Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker explained that trash pickup at the curb will not happen in the city during the strike. City officials shared shared a map and locations for collection centers where residents can bring their trash during the strike. Trash has piled up throughout the city since the strike began.
  • AFSCME District Council 33 represents around 9,000 workers employed in city functions such as sanitation, the water department, police dispatch, street maintenance and at the airport.

It makes no sense how everyone, including citizens, business owners, and politicians alike can recognize that wages are too low for the average worker to simply support their self, let alone a family, and yet these companies and cities still don't want to pay anyone a living wage. What are they expecting people to do?

They complain that people aren't having children, yet don't provide a sustainable way for the average person to raise a child.

Union workers want a 20% raise over 4 years while the mayor is offering 13. Philly sanitation workers are like the least paid in the country at somewhere around 21$ an hour. They haven't really had a raise since the 80s I believe. Also there are about 60 locations where folks can dump trash, but the ones in the videos are the ones near the city centers with the most people. Also LL and Jazmyn Sullivan just denied playing at a WAWA concert on the 4th because they didn't want to cross the picket line

America!!!

Plus if you've watched the Wire you understand what's being done here. They trying to do a Howie Roseman "kick the can down the road plan." with paying them.

Parker can't really give into their demands right now or else every other union will go on strike and demand money at the same time thus potentially bankrupting the city. However if this goes another week or 2 like rumored, she may have to just off of civilian pressure. With all that said, couple this with her giving herself a 9% raise and all her people got raises when she got in office, and the Sixers arena debacle...Philly might be about to go Republican 🤷🏾‍♂️

This is Philly after the strike:

This is a common issue throughout the entire country. So many cities and businesses have gotten away with passing the buck when it comes to a cost of living adjustment (COLA), now that there is no one to pass the issue on to, its either pay up or close up shop.

Its pretty damn wild how many people have been living under paid and they don't even realize it until now, but their pay has not kept up with COLA since the 80s most likely.

What makes me a little less empathetic, even if I have shared this boat, is that i watch people consistently vote against their own best interests and even ostracized their coworkers who try to educate them on these things, yet no one truly cares until the issue is staring directly at them.

This. This is the main issue, the optics are straight up baaadddd

Can't say, nah we can't pay y'all sanitation workers money but give you and your cronies money in the same breath

She just as much trash juice as all the shit that's piled up on the street corners out there

Oh and if you thought Philly had a rodent problem before, ohhhh lawd

Oh, and I forgot to mention Jalen Hurts had to donate air conditioners for Philly schools last year

On a serious note, I support any and all strikes. Especially against the government.

We got money for building 30,000 pound bombs to drop on Iran that cost 30 million each just cause Israel asked too, we can fucking afford to pay people performing essential services more.

I understand your sentiment but this is a local/state government issue no?
