This Generation Is Soft Pt.3438098: Ari Lennox Says Martin Roasting Pam Hurt Her Feelings

Martin helped write the jokes. And had a lot of input of what was used

So therefore she accused Martin of being colorist

That doesn't refute anything I said.

None of the jokes were colorist. Martin never attacked Pam for her skin tone. Again, Ari's problem wasn't actually the jokes. She didn't like the fact that a light-skinned woman was the love interest and a dark-skinned woman was chick that Martin attacked. To her, that dynamic was colorist.

She attacked Martin jokes at Pam.

So therefore she’s placing blame on him

You can add the love interest part if you want but she specifically called out the jokes by Martin as an attack on black women.

Well the common denominator with both examples is that on living single, she and Kyle ended up smashing/a couple

On martin there was that famous episode of him fantasizing about Pam. So the ones snapping on each other the most end up together.

There was also the rumor back then that MartyMar was smashing Tichina and Tisha

Bruh are you purposely trying to be obtuse or something?

No one is arguing about whether or not Ari's problem was with Pam being the subject of Martin's jokes. What I said was that the jokes themselves were not colorist (i.e. they weren't targeted at Pam's skin tone). Ari herself didn't even make that accusation. Her problem was that it was the dark-skinned woman that was the butt of the jokes. She felt that putting the dark-skinned woman in that position was colorist. She was also the one that brought the love interest angle not me.

Anyway, I hate how reductive people can be. Ari knows nothing about the casting call. She's just assuming that Tichina was chosen to play Pam because she was dark-skinned. She's not even considering the fact that plenty of women of all types of skin tones applied for the role and Tichina got it because she did the best job or maybe she got it because the people in casting knew about her and thought, she as an actress, was perfect for the role. Let's be real. If we switched Tisha and Tichina, does anyone actually think Tisha would have made a better Pam?

Colorists jokes don't have to directly mention someone's skin tone. You're smart enough to know that. I don't agree with Ari Lennox, but I'm also confused at how so many don't get that point also.

He mostly picked on her hot breath and hair. Two things both light and dark skinned people can be picked on about. I’ve definitely met and know a couple light skinned people who have fallen in both those categories. 😂

The masculine jokes, the nappy hair jokes all could be linked to and have a history of being aimed more at dark-skinned women. Again I don't think that the spirit of these jokes carried that intent in Martin specifically but I can also recognize how it could be interpreted that way based on history of those types of jokes being aimed at a darker skinned Black woman.

We get the point. We just don't agree. People have to stop acting like every time someone doesn't jump on a bandwagon, its because they can't comprehend where the wagon is going.

Also, while a joke doesn't have to explicitly mention skin tone to be colorist, you can't just claim that any old joke is colorist because it's aimed at a dark-skinned person. That's what Ari is doing. Again, she never said anything about the substance of the jokes. Her expressed stance was that the jokes were colorist because they were aimed at the dark-skinned woman in the cast. That's bullshit.

This reminds me of the story about King Louie in the original Jungle Book. The execs at Disney wanted Louie Armstrong to voice King Louie. Either they thought against it or Armstrong turned it down. The problem was King Louie is an orangutan, and someone feared it would be seen as racist for having a black man voice an ape. Instead, the execs basically got some white dudes to do their best Louie Armstrong impression. The result was Armstrong missing out on a check because what people would falsely assume was at play. That's basically what Ari is doing. She has a complex that is probably legitimate due to what she experience when she came up. She's now projecting that complex onto the show. By her logic, they should have gotten a light-skinned woman to play Pam to avoid colorism and Tichina Arnold would have missed out on her biggest acting role ever for some shit that most likely wasn't in the minds of anyone behind the show.

The bold is all that was needed..idk what the rest was about because as I stated explicitly I don't agree with Ari regarding Martin specifically. I just also disagreed with what I pointed out in your "her skin tone wasn't a target" comment and you acknowledge as such.

You did more than just disagree with the skin tone not being a target comment. You suggested I didn't understand her complaint. My post was mostly about how I understand what she's saying and don't agree.

Cool. It just didn't appear that way when you went out your way to mention he never directly mentioned her skin tone. If thats understood that doesn't need to be directly mentioned then using it as an aside didn't really make sense.

I didn't go out of my way to mention anything, bruh. I was just stating a fact. I'm sure it is possible to make colorist jokes that don't directly reference skin tone, but we're not going sit here and act stupid about this. Most colorist jokes back then were on some "You so black..." type shit. Martin calling Pam "Angela Bassett Hound" ain't colorist, and we all know that.

Exactly. So the you saying this wasn't needed
(i.e. they weren't targeted at Pam's skin tone)

The latter part is actually why the topic even exist. Because some only recognize jokes as being colorist when they're explicitly refercing skin tone. Same as a colorist jokes towards a dark skin man doesn't have to refer to his skin tone but if there's a joke about him being overly aggressive then there's a chance the connection to skin tone could be drawn as darker skin Black males get that tagged on them in a negative way and have historically.

It was needed because as I said, most colorist jokes do reference skin tone. That's what makes them colorist. The fact that it might be possible to make some roundabout colorist joke without referencing skin tone doesn't change the facts. They clearly weren't trying to make any explicitly colorist jokes.

I hear what you're saying, but that shit is too squishy. You're talking about implied colorism, and the problem with accusations about implied anything is sometimes that shit is just in the heads of the accusers and not something that was actually real.
