Thoughts on this take??

To go back further it can be argued 97 was Puff and Mase

98-99 was DMX/Ruff Ryders and Cash Money

When you say eras its kinda subjective... IMO rappers share eras really, as eras last more than one year and merge together...

Did Nelly actually have an era??? I think so but when he was having his era so was Em/Dre and Ja... Then his second album was during 50's era too...

Jay had smash hit singles and albums from 1998 onwards, plus he was the figurehead of Roc-a-Fella, which was a movement from the 90s until the late 2000s...

I think Jay and Nas actually shared an era around 2000 to like 2003 tbh the start of their battle dominated hip hop and international radio and TV and produced classic singles, disses, albums, huge record sales and influenced styles too...

What I will say is that I dont think Jay was as big a popstar as 50, Nelly, Ja, Em etc Beyonce defo made him more of an international celeb but hop hop wise Jay defo had his era...

Nah….most of them niggaz became pop acts during tha biggest part of their “era”

Hov was movin’ units like a pop acts during his eras but was still very much a hip hop artist

Hell I went to tha Rock the Mic tour when 50 had tha biggest album out and was still opening up for Jay…

This

When it comes to some people we rank number #1 on where they stood culturally in hip hop and then certain “years” “eras” people wanna go strictly record sales & radio

But whatever criteria niggas wanna pick and choose at that particular time it’s always the side to argue against Jay lol

Jay was the rapper that when it was all said and done we looked back and said "yo, he really ran shit for 7 straight years". All those "eras" had a definitive end. Em disappeared to come back and live off nostalgia, 50 and Nelly's stars faded, and Murder Inc got caught up in the Feds. Jay never went away, even when he fake retired.

I think Jay is kinda like Lebron in that there was always someone who was arguably a bigger factor, but he spent most of his career at or near the top.
