Fleece or Under Armour (heat gear ) is better than long John's (cotton) as a base layer. Wool is the best but more expensive. I got some SmartWool pants that I loved until I put a small hole in them during skiing. Don't think I'm gonna buy another pair though. Shits expensive.

I love wool and cashmere for winter, but like you said, it can get pricey. Uniqlo heattech has great options for winter basics.
