I'll say this ..

Even though my kids have all black friends.... I'm still weary of overnight stays....

Cuz I gotta really know these people and how they are at their homes....

Cuz kids be getting jumped at sleep overs, some parents are real loose with boys and girls together..... Some parents think they "cool" and let kids get drunk and high..... You always gotta be protective about who your kids hang around....


Boat trip with a bunch of white kids?? Naw, I gotta REALLY know these people... And that's not a situation I see ourselves in
 
This raises more suspicions about things surrounding Nolan's death that don't make sense.

Mostly the parents talking about what they went through to get his phone and car keys.

And talking about how it was strange the timing was as to when his body washed up on shore.


His best friend talks a little bit too, but.......surprisingly, or not........he doesn't seem to think it's about race.

Probably because blacks and whites hanging out together like that is normal for him and his peer group.

It would be foolish and you’d be thinking irrationally to not consider race in this unfortunate situation. Race is ALWAYS in the room. Granted, we still don’t know what happened, but racial differences are to be considered in any situation where people identify differently.

You get fired from work, you have to consider race.

When you don’t get a loan from the bank, you have to consider race.

When you’re walking down the street and another person/group crosses the street to avoid you, you have to consider race.

When you’re pulled over or stopped by the police, you have to consider race.

You can hope race didn’t play a part in this young soul’s death, but it can’t be dismissed simply because you don’t want it to be the reason.

And therein lies the problem.

Too many of us who live in certain communities are oblivious to this.

Never be the only black dude with a group of non-black Latinos

I don’t care who feels a way about that. Non black Latinos are no different from white folks in MANY ways

This is crazy, yet, unsurprising.

We’re othered in every space, including spaces conceived to support us. We’re in this position because of their policies and procedures. Their system. Now, we’re to entrust them with our wellbeing?

Imagine a bunch of police officers performing open heart surgery on patients. That’s what this is. Unqualified. Uninformed. Uninterested.
