It was pushed back due to a director scheduling issue. Then they decided to incorporate Kong into the universe for Kong vs Godzilla in 2020

Godzillas current director said there would be little breadcrumbs leading to KvsG. Also, in a prequel comic about Skull Island scientists made it back and Kong was about 200 ft tall now. So he'll be near Gofzillas height by time their matchup drops.
