This has been a pushback I've had with Euros for years. They always consider themselves so well traveled because most of them to travel throughout the EU at some point in their lives. They don't understand that Americans can do the same thing they do and stay in the US. They also don't understand how different the cultures in the U.S. are. The U.S. doesn't have the historical diversity that Europe does of course, but I'd say we have a comparable cultural diversity. Barring language, California, Lousiana, and Maine are probably close to being as different as France, Spain, and Germany culturally.
