If Your Kid Was Interested In Joining The Military, How Would You Handle It?

I already had this issue personally with both of my kids....we are still talking it thru



my biggest concern would be determining their "true" motivation for wanting to join

unfortunately we do our children a disservice of immediately wanting to kick them out at 18 and expecting them to just figure life out

but the truth is it's unfair to expect a young adult to just make good decisions without guidance based on truly knowing them......and honestly mil recruiters take advantage



I wouldn't recommend joining the military unless u have the real motivation for doing so.....it can be a good deal, but only if u are doing what u really want

but I also wouldn't discourage a young man for going combat arms, cuz honestly we need more Black young men to consider training to be warfighters if necessary

we need more Black SF, Rangers, Infantryman, Cav Scouts, Field Artillery, etc

the way things are now u can't even count on being in a support-type job and not seeing real combat

in that case u are better off getting the full training and equipment if u are going to end up deploying anyway, cuz front lines don't really exist anymore




and if u are just joining for the money right now without a plan to invest in urself long term

then u are just in the same boat as a stripper IMO (well actually worse if u think about it)

I started a trend of people in my family joining the military. I went to the Army. Then 2 of my younger brothers joined the military. One the Army, the other the Navy. The one who joined the Army ex-wife divorced him then joined the Army herself. I would seriously have to guage my kids maturity levels. Its not just deploying. Its having to interact with people who may have undiagnosed PTSD. During Basic Training one of my Drill Sargents was a white guy from West Virginia. He was Infantry. He made it clear he had a personal issue with me. During a live fire training routine he shoved me down to the ground as I was running with a loaded M16 in my hands and many people around me. That could've ended badly. My unit was getting ready to deploy to Iraq and I didnt have enough trust in my chain of command to fly halfway across the world and I got out. My current plan is to let them stay at home and learn the responsibility that comes with being an adult while stacking their money. Try to avoid the military at all cost. Oh I forgot to mention I have a cousin who was in the Navy. Somehow he hit an IED in I wanna say Iraq. Shit completely fried his brain.

Would you try to convince them not to or would you support their decision?

Let her know that a lot of danger will come from male troops. Take any type of combat course to protect yourself follow instincts even at a party with your squad

Follow the damn rules none of that back talking while being in the wrong. Learn a skill that can translate outside

I once talked to an Iraq War vet that was a mechanic.

They said they needed a volunteer for something and he raised his hand.

He was about to go get his tools when they told his ass "naw, go pick up a rifle".

Whoops........

They made him clear out bunkers stuffed with thousands of corpses that Saddam's men dug up from mass graves and burned.

So imagine the stench of thousands of rotting burned bodies hitting you.

Now he can't do BBQs or well done steak because the smell triggers his PTSD.

I'm not pro-military for reasons being, but I have loved ones who served in the past and present... younger bro went navy and got out like 3 years ago.
Presently, my baby sister is in the Navy and is about to be "boots" on the ground... some real eye-opening shit. I support her personal decision

My question to pose to the group :

Is the military worse off than being in the streets? I know the basic answer, but really think about what it is that's being escaped..?
