PRAISE: Marty Mauser, a ping pong champion is a blend of Jimmy Reardon and Howard Ratner from Uncut Gems. Watching the movie i wondered if there is anytime that Marty isn't on the grift? But that's part of the fun of the movie. Played to a crazy, sincere and winning T performance from Timothee Chalamet he's the type of person so arrogant and smug its part of his charm. Even knowing he was setting someone up or seducing a woman at just the right vulnerable moment in her life i couldn't help rooting for him or what crazy misadventures he was going to get into next. Gwyneth Paltrow as Kay Stone definitely brings her own insecurities she must have had along the way to becoming a great actress. Odessa A’zion as Rachel Mizler who i only know from HBO's Love LA is outstanding as Martys sometimes lover. She reminded me of Debra Winger. Kevin O’Leary as Milton Rockwell was great to watch as his frustrations and disdain for Marty grow throughout the movie.Tyler, The Creator as Wally is great as Martys partner in drifting. Director and writer
Josh Safdie and writer Ronald Bronstein once again provide characters and actors from every walk of life that are as interesting as they are eccentric. Scenes are a blend of hilarious and crazy coupled with visuals that lead to some very involving moments. Like most of the characters in the movie i was annoyed by Marty but still curious about him. Especially when he's pushing situations to the limit and further complicating his life and people that are in his orbit.
PROBLEMS: Several predictable turns.
