OPINION Celebrating Thanksgiving and Columbus Day

Yeah but the same people that are claiming new ones are out here celebrating Thanksgiving and Columbus Day and all the other days that they were nice enough to introduce us to. Chinese people still celebrate their New Years but we using the Calandar that they gave us and don’t know what the actual date is. You have to see a problem with that. Our time did not start with them. But I really hate to sound like I am trying to convince people. I like when it is simple back and forth but I am beginning to sound like I am trying to convince people of something they don’t want to hear.

i hate to say it...but we are lost because we have an excuse to be lost. it takes the responsibility off of us to rise above where we are.

Don’t want to go back and forth Bretheren but if you only see certain people on that date and people are planning, scheduling and doing special things on the date than you can see why I would say you are celebrating it. Maybe my view is wrong but I can only go by what I see. People reaching out or inviting you over on that particular day sounds like a celebration to me. But again I could be wrong.
 
Im native and my family does thanksgiving.

Its just a day everyone has off and family can get together and eat/drink together.

Nothing more nothing less

I am not trying to say people shouldn’t get together but again you point out holidays. I agree we black people have been here for 400 years but there wer holidays before you were given these and most people are just enjoying a day off from work to be honest. But when you feel like you must do something on that day you are celebrating it.
 
ok....so no one celebrates thanksgiving and christmas but use it as a day to get together with family and eat and/or exchange gifts...

thanksgiving is just a family dinner... and at this point it's only the families who still have old people around......


the more old people die, the less and less families doing thanksgiving.....

we give less fucks about it than our parents... and our kids give even less fucks about it than we do.....


by the time they have kids, no one is doing that shit no more.....


i actually look more forward to friends giving with my friends than thanksgiving....

I don't know. To me, to celebrate something, you have to actually acknowledge what it is. So I might agree that black people celebrate Thanksgiving to some extent, but I don't agree that black people in general celebrate the historical meaning of Thanksgiving. In my experience, Thanksgiving has taken on a more religious overtone. At least in my family and my wife's family, it's more about giving thanks to God for blessings than remembering some made up meal between Natives and Pilgrims.
 
No one celebrates it but everyone seems to say it is day that our family gets together. If you make it a family get together day than it is a form of celebration to me. There is nothing wrong with it and families should get together but let’s not act like it is for us. America( Thanksgiving is not celebrated anywhere else) has convinced you that you have to do something on that day. No one gets together for Labor Day. Please don’t act like you don’t feel compelled to do something on that day and if you don’t feel that way that I am just wrong and that is ok with me.
