At least 20 million people in the US may already have been infected with Covid-19, according to the latest estimate by health officials.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says the true number of cases is likely to be 10 times higher than the reported figure.

It comes as the state of Texas halted its reopening as infections and hospitalisations surged.

The US has recorded 2.4m confirmed infections and 122,370 deaths.

Some southern and western states have been reporting record numbers of cases in recent days.

The Dutch version of the CDC - and basically all other governmental health orgs worldwide sans rogues like North Korea - report the same thing: the actual nr of infected people (and also people who already had it) is much higher than those who have been confirmed, the mortality rate in the states isn't 5% or in Holland 12%, that's just the rate of what is confirmed...

The actual mortality rate is way below 1%...the excess mortality of - highly infected Holland - of 2019 during the same period of 2020 is only a few k and not that much different than the 2018 epidemic...

You basically just said "We know the mortality rate is way less that what is being reported because we don't know how many cases we didn't know about. All you can do is go by the confirmed cases. Yes, it's highly likely that a bunch of people contracted the disease before testing started and didn't get counted in the confirmed cases. It's also possible that people died from the virus and their deaths were contributed to something else because testing wasn't being conducted.

Again, no one is saying this is ebola, but people keep comparing it to the common flu. That's clearly not the case. We are doing a lot more to contain this and even then there isn't much that can be done to save someone if the virus hits them hard. That's not the case with the flu. None of this really matters though. 100K+ is a lot of people, and the shit was unnecessary. We've seen places like South Korea that responded correctly and the virus barely did anything there.
