A canary trap is a method for exposing an information leak by giving different versions of a sensitive document to each of several suspects and seeing which version gets leaked. It could be one false statement, to see whether sensitive information gets out to other people as well. Special attention is paid to the quality of the prose of the unique language, in the hopes that the suspect will repeat it verbatim in the leak, thereby identifying the version of the document.

Recently, a dude I'm semi-cool with randomly called me to tell me a dude who he was supposed to be best friends with.... That I also went to HS with was smoking crack and fucked up some of his real estate properties.

Shit was completely unprompted, and had me immediately suspicious to as why dude would call me out the blue to gossip about his (to the best of my knowledge) best friend.

Like this was his boy. I know for a fact I'm not part of either of these dudes inner circle, so to give me this information could only mean one thing to me.

He was trying to see if and who I would tell about it.. Like if the information came back to him or his boy... He would know that I was talking about their business... Or he would know I was still in communication with certain people. Either way it was highly insulting to my intelligence. But even more I was kinda impressed at how quickly I recognized the tactic.

Has anyone else had experience with this kinda shit?

There was a movie or tv show with a scene like this. I've only seen the clip of that scene too but I'm sure one of y'all have seen it. Dope nigga was on his way to the airport and gets pulled over 'cause they think he's got coke or something on him. They find what looks like kilos, but then look in the trunk and there's a bunch of boxes of either Bisquick or powdered milk or some shit like that and the let him go. Later he reveals that he gave different flight times to different people in an office (I'm assuming lawyers) to find out who was tipping off the cops and it turns out it was some broad runnin' her mouf.

Tried finding the clip but can't. Pretty sure it'll pop up on my YT shorts feed again.
 
I couldn't think of what the tactic was called, and when Buck said it ..I slapped the desk at work like

"That's what it's called!"

Y'all make threads from Tiktoks all the damn time. I'm not even denying shit... But the crack head story is 100% real. Shit happened like 3 weeks ago.

It makes no sense for him to randomly call me to tell me something personal about his best friend. We've never had that kinda friendship.

Dude always got some kinda mess going, and was prolly tryna see if I was still in communication with certain people. Like if one of them asked him what's up with his boy... He would know I talked to them.

I never said shit though, cuz the whole thing seemed very random and weird.
