I never forget, I was like 15-16, close to my son's age now... My father had fucked up his marriage due to his self destructive behavior... And needed somewhere to live.
We had just moved across the street to my grandfather's house because he was sick with Alzheimer's and his wife's family abandoned him with the insurance money after she died.... So we moved in with him, but the landlord at our apartment across the street, let us let the apartment as long as we paid the rent...
Because both these things happened around the same time, my mom worked out and arrangement where he could live across the streetn in our old apartment... He just had to pay the rent.
I initially thought this was a goat arrangement and we could finally establish a healthy father/son relationship while he was across the street during my teenage years....
Flat out... It just didn't go like they. His personality, his arrogance, vs my personality, and my expectations or even entitlement... I'll take that cuz I was a kid.... We just clashed.... It was clash after clash..... There was no way I could be the bigger man for us to be cool.
One of our biggest clashes was on father's day....
.I got him a card, I saw his car outside, I went over to ring his bell... Now I had a key, but I didn't use it, cuz he got mad about that once. But he really came to the door pissed didn't call before I came over ...I literally lived across the street...I was just trying to give him a father's day card.... And bro didn't want to hear it. He was in bed... He didn't plan to get up later, and I was inconsiderate for coming to his house without calling first.
To this day, I don't like people coming to my house without calling, and that was definitely one of the bigger things that pushed us apart... Cuz he never got that card.
