This, this was the problem I was thinking could happen but wasn’t for sure would happen.
People took the first couple days to hear what Drake had to say and then vanished.
Never mind the fact that the negativity towards these albums, warranted or not, is louder than anything he’s put out before.
Putting out these 3 albums was a move, maybe partly cuz of getting out of the deal.. which let’s be honest it’s not like the label was in the dark about it like it was some big brain move. Part of it I’m sure, is the fact that they were preparing for the album alone underperforming due to public backlash. This animosity towards Drake for a large portion of people hasn’t really went away.
As of now Iceman is projected to debut with around 520K units sold. Putting it roughly between two mixtapes, IYRTITL and More Life for first week sales all-time in Drakes discography. Given that this has been hyped for more than a year, this is kinda telling for where we at right now. We aren’t getting a runaway number one hit out of any of these albums, or a critical/commercial smash. The streaming numbers will still be steady, but they probably won’t be as high as Drake’s label and his team would like for this particular album. They especially won’t be as high as his past chart topping numbers. Admittedly, they definitely won’t get to where GNX was. Iceman is still a good album. Drake will get the recognition of the number 1 debut on the charts and surpassing Jay-Z for most number 1 rap albums. However, with the initial release and hype dying down once we get into June & by the measure of Drake being one of the biggest names of music… all I’m saying is the machine being thrown behind this just for these numbers says a lot.
