Yall Into Emulation/Rom Hacks/Mods? The Thread

My primary spot for the last 25 years or so has been romhustler.net. Coolroms and Emuparadise are two others I've used.

Archive.org also has near complete MAME rom sets. What's missing are CHD's (compressed hard drive) and Laserdiscs (for games like Dragons' Lair, Mach III, Space Ace, etc). There's also Dreamcast isos there too.

A lot of CHD's can be found as torrents. That's how I got Killer Instinct and the SFIII dumps.

yea the archive that i had used b4 to set up my steamdeck the link wasnt working anymore

i never heard of these other ones tho so good looking out. trying to help Mac get his steamdeck setup

appreciate it fam!

this a good thread too

@Eyerone @konceptjones @AP4.0 any of yall got any good spots for roms/bios ?

Honestly I just google until I find the rom that works. With the bios, I’ve found that’s they are mad easy to find but the trick is finding out the exact name of the bios that the emulator is looking for and renaming the bios file to that and then making sure to point the emulator to that bios file

Yea i wanna say that was how I originally got my bios by googling them but its been a minute my roms I got from a site but I aint know they could just be googled too

What I’ve noticed since gettin back into Roms and shit is that each emulator can be finicky & some roms only work well with very specific ones. That’s the main reason I jump around between sites

Different versions of MAME are like that. However, there's certain specific rom sets for MAME that work with almost every version of it, like the 0.139 romset I grabbed for RetroPie works well with the version of MAMEUI64 I use.

lol I was pretty much referring to mame but it’s like that with switch roms too.

And I’ll be god damned if I’m about to download entire rom sets. I’ll just use a diff emulator if anything. Rom sets are dope in that they contain a whole library but there’s so much bullshit in there that you gotta go in and delete. I don’t have time to be filtering thru 12 diff regional versions and betas and what not.

I think at this point the 0.139 MAME rom set can be used almost universally but I still see folks claiming 0.78 (from 2003) is still very compatible. I have another one I grabbed as a torrent some years ago, but lately I've been running into roms that are either incompatible or just plain missing. All I do is copy/paste the same rom from my 0.139 folder and it works just fine.

These cats I found on discord have been keeping the old college hoops 2k8 game alive with mods

I finally got it to start working again after I researched the fix for my GPU issue

This game is so much fun

I think that’s what I like most about the emulation scene. It’s a lot of dedicated fans across consoles and genres that do soooooooooooo much work (for free most times) to make shit better.

Sidenote, I’ve had my Ayn Thor since late October and still haven’t posted any type of review. Just know that this shit is 100% worth the money & so far does everything I need it to do. Yesterday, I downloaded a Sega Model 3 emulator for android. Didn’t know what I was even gettin into but I’m glad i did. Shit brought back maaaaaad memories of being at the arcade at the mall before my high school years.

Ok this gonna be my treat to myself after I move

My brother!

You won’t regret it however depending on what you trying to do overall, there might be better emulator devices for you

Consider the Odin 3 if 2 screens isn’t make or break for you because it’s wayyyyyy more powerful than the Thor. Once more driver support comes out for that Snapdragon Elite 8, the Odin 3 will be on POINT.

and as a second note, whatever you end up ordering, you want to do it sooner than later because of price hikes and batch shipping. People who are ordering devices today may not receive em until May. Just some good for thought
