I can see that. I can also see it just meaning for the world in general because for example my office is literally all Black people, yet because I'm at work i still code switch because I'm at work. Once I leave and go home how I speak, my word choices and my mannerisms when im with my wife is very different.

Interesting, I didn't know people did that. Whenever I've been around a bunch of black people in a professional setting, we always just speak normally. That said, since COVID, for me at least, code switching is out the door. I speak the same way in the office that I do at home. White people were shocked for a little while, but they got used to it and it's fine.

I mean i may cuss slightly but I'm being explicit or saying nigga at work if I'm speaking out loud. I draw a line between my personality at work vs my personality out of the office. I'm not rigid or stiff and I generally don't care if people decide to cuss or use certain words if thats how they roll. I just keep that line up so folks don't get it twisted. May also be because I'm in an upper management position as well though so I have to be a bit more careful how I carry myself and what someone may overhear me say.

Now outside of work, I've had coworkers tell me they were surprised I speak the way I do because I cuss all the damn time, my natural DC accent gets heavy as fuck and I slur the hell out of my words and some other things I drop when I'm not in a professional environment.

I don't really cuss at work either, thought I don't consider that code switching. I do have plenty of white colleagues that cuss all the time in meetings and stuff like that. I think there is a difference between professionalism and code-switching.

There is a difference but also some overlap. Especially the way I cuss lol. But even something as simple as how heavy my accent is is code switching. There's a difference in me saying "area" vs "urrrea" or "carry" vs "currry" as I do when I'm not at work. Or even the tone of my voice. Because I have to talk to people alot, I work in property management, I have to somewhat change the tone of my voice because it's naturally very monotone and devoid of emotion. If I kept that same tone at work it would seem as if I cared about absolutely nothing at all. I can use that tone at home freely though. But this is also stuff I've adjusted as I've gotten higher positions and had to adapt. As I said before my position also influences these things too

I know what you mean. I use to say whole words like: car, door, store. Now it's straight ca', do', and sto' unless I'm giving a presentation or brief then I try to keep it in check.
