OPINION Is Marvel's Black Panther movie really a "special moment" for Black America??

again, 10 yr old AP and 34 yr old AP are going to watch that movie with two vastly different perspectives. I didnt say the movie was trash, it was just ok.

go in any school in this country any grade and ask kids to tell you about MLK, Malcolm, Obama, and T'challa

see who they get most excited about, and who they know the most about, who they look up to more.

well it's trendy ass niggaz that's overreacting to this movie, and it's screaming to our overall identity crisis as a people, and ultimately i see that as more harmful than good...

one because thats on the fam .. school lightly touches on each... More so on MLK than any.. the disconnect has to be fixed from home.. thats on the parents..

and Kids always are more excited about xbox, gta call of duty..or comic book characters you can ask any teacher and they will tell you this..

I think a big part of the hype is not that it's here, but that it's FINALLY here. A lot of people remember how Wesley Snipes said he wanted to do a movie based on the Black Panther character since the early 90's, and Hollywood was going to allow him to do it too. He was supposed to star in it and everything and it kept getting tossed around, announced that it was moving forward for years and then... nothing. Next thing you know, Wesley is Blade and shit if off the hook so after the first one some folks was like "aiight bet, now he can get back to Black Panther..." but it never happened. Here we are well over 20 years later and cats like me that were heavy into comics back then are finally getting a movie we were promised back in college... and ths shit looks dope as fuck. This level of hype is natural.

Honestly, I don't think it would have gotten the right treatment had it been done back then. I doubt the budget to do it justice would have been there back then. I mean, Spike Lee could barely get money to make his movies, Robert Townsend's budgets were minimal as fuck, Matty Rich and Singleton's flicks were shoestring, so even with Wesley being as big a star as he was back then I doubt he would have gotten enough money to do it right.

yea it was loaded as fuck, but the point remains a fictional character about to be the most important figure in the black community during black history month, and that shit is worth a discussion about what it says about us as a people..

When Meteor Man came out I was 21 and just about to go back to EMU within a few weeks. When I saw that advertisement for it I was like "Aiight, bet... Townsend doing good for himself." and applauded the fact that a Black filmmaker would step outside the box they were pigeonholed into and make a superhero flick.

But... bruh... Shits looked corny as hell to me. Meteor Man had two superhero flicks to live up to in order to get my dollars: Batman and Batman Returns, and it simply didn't compare. I watched it on HBO and thought it was corny but I still recognized it for what it was: The first Black superhero flick ever made with a Black director and cast.

to your point Du, i do agree that people in general are trendy. This isnt exclusive to the black community, however, in this instance, to Playmakers point, all i see are a buncha corny ass memes b/c we live in a society, unfortunately, where everybody wants to be the next hashtag to pop...or to have their meme be the one that stands out
